Short Attention Span Cinema: StoryCorps Animated Shorts

StoryCorps Animated Shorts return to IFC Center as part of our ongoing “Short Attention Span Cinema” series with a different short screening weekly before our regular features. The acclaimed oral history project’s animated films bring true-life stories to the screen, recounting stories of family life, immigration, hard times and unexpected kindnesses. This edition includes films from StoryCorps’ September 11th initiative and OutLoud initiative, which is dedicated to celebrating and preserving the diverse stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities, and wraps up with three new films from from StoryCorps’ recently launched “Military Voices Initiative,” which records, preserves, and shares the stories of veterans, servicemembers, and military families.

Launched in 2003 to collect personal histories from across the country, StoryCorps created its first animated films in 2010, with the first series on POV in August of that year. To date, all the films in the project have been produced by StoryCorps, directed by The Rauch Brothers—Mike and Tim Rauch—with animation by Tim Rauch. Funding for StoryCorps Animated Shorts is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and is in partnership with POV.
StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. One of the largest oral history projects of its kind, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 50,000 interviews from 95,000 participants. Interviews are archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and select stories are broadcast on NPR’s Morning Edition. Currently StoryCorps operates booths in San Francisco, Chicago, and Atlanta, and has a traveling MobileBooth. Inaugurated with IFC Center’s opening in 2005, the ongoing “Short Attention Span Cinema” series plays short films before the theater’s regular features, every day of the year. Past editions have spotlighted shorts from film festivals like Slamdance and Doxita; work from The New York Times’ Op-Docs, The 78 Project and UNICEF’s Oneminutesjr. initiatives; and films by Isabella Rossellini, Jay Rosenblatt, DA Pennebaker, Jeff Scher, Emily Hubley, Guy Maddin, James Nares, Jessica Oreck and others.
