Short Attention Span Cinema: StoryCorps Animated Shorts 2012

StoryCorps Animated Shorts, animated films that bring to the screen true-life stories from the noted oral history project, now playing before our regular features. The program runs for 12 weeks, with a special evening planned around StoryCorps’ National Day of Listening in November.
StoryCorps created its first animated films in 2010, with the first StoryCorps Animated Shorts airing on POV in August of that year. To date, all the films in the project have been produced by StoryCorps, directed by The Rauch Brothers—Mike and Tim Rauch—with animation by Tim Rauch. Funding for StoryCorps Animated Shorts is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, in partnership with POV.
An independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of their lives, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 40,000 interviews from nearly 80,000 participants since 2003. One of the largest oral history projects of its kind, StoryCorps preserves its interviews at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and features selected histories on popular Friday broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition. The project’s first StoryBooth recording facility opened on October 23, 2003, in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, with MobileBooths hitting the road in 2005. Currently StoryCorps operates booths in San Francisco and Atlanta. StoryCorps launched the first National Day of Listening in 2008 to encourage all Americans to record an interview with a loved one on the day after Thanksgiving using equipment that is readily available in most homes—from cell phones to tape recorders to computers or even pen and paper.
