Werner Herzog’s Death Row Portraits

Wednesday, April 25 - Thursday, April 26, 2012

We’re thrilled to welcome back Werner Herzog to IFC Center for the U.S. premiere of the director’s cuts of his new DEATH ROW PORTRAITS on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26. Herzog will screen the complete four-part series — which premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival — in two programs and lead a discussion following each screening both nights. Herzog will also sign books, posters and DVDs at 6:45pm both nights, including copies of the newly released IFC Center hit Into the Abyss, his acclaimed recent documentary about a triple homicide in Texas. Separate admission for each program.

Conceived as a companion to Into the Abyss, DEATH ROW PORTAITS focuses on five inmates awaiting their appointment with a lethal injection in the Texas and Florida prison systems. Through their stories, Herzog conducts a uniquely thought-provoking analysis of why people, and the state, kill. Each inmate offers an account of life in captivity and the crime that condemned them, as Herzog explores the emotions that these men and women go through as they address the haunting knowledge of exactly when—and how—they are going to die.  A broadcast version of the series aired recently to critical acclaim on Investigation Discovery; the IFC Center screenings are the premiere of the uncut director’s versions of the films.
