New 4K Restoration!

Friday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m.: Q&A with producer Paul Zaentz

Presented in a new 4K restoration, Miloš Forman’s rollicking 1984 adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s hit play won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. After a suicide attempt sends elderly composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham, who won an Oscar for his performance) to a mental asylum, he regales a visiting priest with the tale of his long ago friendship with the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce, also nominated for Best Actor), a rivalry that led to both men’s downfall and, Salieri claims, Mozart’s untimely death. The pious and only marginally talented Salieri is shocked to discover that the greatest musical genius of his time is ill-mannered and annoying, and Salieri begins to question his faith in a God who would bestow his greatest gifts to the likes of a “dirty-minded little creature” like Mozart, whose blithely vulgar ways drive Salieri to teeth-grinding aggravation and eventually, madness. A story about the mysteries of creativity and divinely-bestowed genius, as well as jealousy, addiction and disapproving dads, AMADEUS is lavish big-screen entertainment.
