A bold adaptation of the Thomas Hardy classic Tess of the D’Urbervilles set in contemporary India, Winterbottom’s (The Trip) newest stars Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) as the dutiful daughter of a peasant family in rural Rajasthan. At a dance, she catches the eye of a wealthy young man who pursues her with relentless determination. Swept off her feet, she moves with him to the cosmopolitan sprawl of Mumbai, but life in the city soon threatens their newfound bliss.
