New York Super Week

IFC Center is proud to announce its lineup for the inaugural New York Super Week, a program of special events in the week leading up to and during New York Comic Con. Presented by IFC Center—the exclusive cinema partner for New York Super Week—and noted event producer ReedPOP, the theater’s program spans sneak previews of new movies and revivals of action, animated and genre classics, as well as special appearances by filmmakers and creators.

The festivities at IFC Center kick off Friday, October 3 with the New York premiere of Isao Takahata’s THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA, the latest animated masterwork from Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli, and a special encore screening of the National Theatre Live’s production of FRANKENSTEIN, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. Program highlights include:

  • Sneak preview of new documentary SHOWRUNNERS, featuring filmmakers and subjects in person
  • Community creator Dan Harmon in person to present a New York premiere of HARMONTOWN, a chronicle of his popular national podcast tour
  • Movie Night with Baz Luhrmann, with the visionary director presenting a screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, followed by a conversation about the film with Luhrmann and star Susan Sarandon
  • Movie Night with Nick Offerman, with the noted actor in person to screen and discuss the cult classic BILLY JACK, one of his all-time favorites, and to sign copies of his memoir-cum-lifestyle manifesto Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man’s Fundamentals for Delicious Living
  • Sneak previews of three new films from the IFC Midnight label, including EXTRATERRESTRIAL with filmmakers The Vicious Brothers and stars Michael Ironside and Brittany Allen in person
  • Rare 35mm prints of classic Hong Kong kung fu movies, programmed by the genre fanatics of Subway Cinema, and of Nicolas Roeg’s arthouse chiller DON’T LOOK NOW
  • A special advance screening of YOUNG ONES, with director Jake Paltrow and stars Nicholas Hoult and Kodi Smit-McPhee in person
  • The New York premiere of the complete, uncensored director’s cut of Lars Von Trier’s notorious NYMPHOMANIAC
  • Special encore screenings of National Theatre Live’s acclaimed production of FRANKENSTEIN starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, alternating roles as Victor, and directed by Danny Boyle
  • Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation, a compendium of outrageous and award-winning animated shorts from around the world

Plus daily screenings of 2014 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL SHORT FILMS, a program of eight acclaimed shorts from around the world that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival—including three of the festival’s top award winners.

The IFC Center’s events will complement New York Super Week’s stellar lineup of already announced programs at other venues throughout the city.
