  NYC Premiere + Q&A with filmmaker J.M. Harper!

DOC NYC SELECTS, the in-person, ongoing screening series that serves as an extension of DOC NYC’s annual fall festival, returns for a one-night-only final 2026 event on September 15th at IFC Center with the NYC PREMIERE of the Sundance-winning film SOUL PATROL.

Winner of the Directing Award for U.S. Documentary at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker J.M. Harper brings a startling immediacy to his recovery of the unresolved trauma of Black Americans in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. Harper fluidly integrates multiple storytelling techniques to provide a shattering sense of the unimaginable pressures (including mounting racial tensions) and harrowing missions of a small, formerly classified team of an all-Black elite Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) unit. More than 50 years after being abruptly separated at the end of their tour together, the surviving patrol members gather to reflect on the life-defining experience of their LRRP team. “Team is unity, strength, dignity, power – all these things together. It’s like being born again,” one of the soul patrollers says – an especially powerful statement from a man who says his soul died in Vietnam.

The screening will be followed by an on-stage conversation with filmmaker J.M. Harper.
