The 4%: Film’s Gender Problem – The Short Film Series & Panel Discussion
Friday, June 17 - Thursday, July 28, 2016
A new, provocative original series of six short films designed to explore the hot-button issues around the striking gender gap in Hollywood, this intimate, revealing series from Alex Gibney’s award-winning Jigsaw Productions captures an impressive collection of A-list and creative personalities. Both women and men in the entertainment industry share first-person insights, questions, and anecdotes about the place of women in Hollywood.
Each of the six films screens for a week before IFC Center’s regular features as part of our ongoing “Short Attention Span Cinema” program:
In conjunction with the weekly screenings, a special event Tuesday, July 26 at 7:30 will screen the entire series, followed by a panel discussion about the issues the films probe. Panelists include: Caroline Suh, director of The 4%; Amber Tamblyn, the director/actor/writer of Paint It Black; Wren Arthur, partner/producer at Olive Productions and producer of Paint It Black; and producer Alexis Alexanian, president of New York Women in Film & Television. Executive producer and industry veteran Laura Michalchyshyn will moderate the panel.
Inaugurated with IFC Center’s opening in 2005, the ongoing “Short Attention Span Cinema” series plays short films before the theater’s regular features, every day of the year. Past editions have spotlighted shorts from film festivals like Slamdance and Doxita; work from The New York Times’ Op-Docs, The 78 Project, the Storycorps oral history project and UNICEF’s OneMinutesJr. initiative; and films by Isabella Rossellini, Jay Rosenblatt, DA Pennebaker, Jeff Scher, Emily Hubley, Guy Maddin, James Nares, Jessica Oreck and others.
