Matangi / Maya / M.I.A.

Friday, September 28 - Thursday, October 25, 2018

Drawn from a cache of home video shot over 22 years, this intimate profile follows a woman’s remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to outspoken, provocative pop star. Born Matangi, she fled Sri Lanka’s bloody civil war to become Maya, a precocious London teen. She emerged on the global stage as M.I.A., with a mashup, cut-and-paste identity fusing Tamil politics, art school punk, and hip-hop beats.
