Tribute to Massimo Vignelli: Helvetica

Monday, October 20, 2014

A special tribute to legendary designer Vignelli, including a screening of Gary Hustwit’s acclaimed documentary HELVETICA (2007), about the nearly ubiquitous typeface of which Vignelli was a staunch proponent, including never-before-seen outtakes of Vignelli himself. Following the screening, Hustwit and a panel composed of longtime associate Beatriz Cifuentes of Vignelli Asscociates, noted typeface designer Tobias Frere-Jones, Design Matters’ Debbie Millman and graphic designer Paula Scher of Pentragram will discuss Vignelli’s life, career and legacy in a conversation moderated by Todd Schliemann, Design Partner at Ennead Architects.

HELVETICA is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
