“JOE GIDEON, the Bob Fosse surrogate figure in “All That Jazz,” is riding for a spectacular fall. He is directing and choreographing a new Broadway musical, editing a multimillion dollar film that’s months behind schedule and sleeping with as many women as he can sneak into his schedule. Also demanding his time are his beautiful, patient young mistress, his talented, mostly sympathetic former wife and his 12year‐old daughter, who adores him. He smokes too much and drinks heavily. The day begins with Dexedrine, AlkaSeltzer, eyedrops and a hideous confrontation with the face in the mirror.

Because Joe Gideon’s career closely resembles that of Mr. Fosse, who not only directed and choreographed “All That Jazz,” but also wrote the screenplay with the late Robert Alan Aurthur, there will be a tendency to see the film as Mr. Fosse’s answer to “8 ½,” in which Federico Fellini wittily examined his own life at a point when he feared his creativity was at an end. “All That Jazz” even looks like a Fellini film — especially “Juliet of the Spirits” — having been photographed by Giuseppe Rotunno, Fellini’s favorite cameraman. But looks and autobiographical details are, I think, deceiving.” – The New York Times (1979)
