New Restoration!

This screening will be introduced by Lee Kline, Technical Director at Criterion, whose team worked from a 16-bit 4K film scan of the original 35mm negative A/B rolls to restore the film. The original 2.0 surround soundtrack, a live-wire score by Neil Young, was remastered from the 35mm magnetic tracks.

DEAD MAN, Jarmusch’s first period piece, is a surreal reimagining of the Wild West. Accountant William Blake (Johnny Depp) has hardly arrived in the godforsaken outpost of Machine before he’s caught in the middle of a fatal lovers’ quarrel. Wounded and on the lam, Blake falls under the watch of the outcast Nobody (Gary Farmer), who guides his companion on a spiritual journey, teaching him to dispense poetic justice along the way. Featuring austerely beautiful black-and-white photography by Robby Müller (Breaking the WavesParis, Texas), DEAD MAN is a profound and unique revision of the western genre. With Gabriel Byrne, Crispin Glover, Jared Harris, John Hurt, Robert Mitchum, Alfred Molina, Iggy Pop, & Billy Bob Thornton.
