You may not be aware, but The Silence of the Lambs isn’t actually the first Hannibal Lecter movie….that honor goes Michael Mann’s MANHUNTER, released in 1986 (that’s 40 years ago) and opening at IFC Center in a new 4K restoration on July 24.

Michael Mann’s films are revered by serious cinephiles, but even casual moviegoers can appreciate his cool, stylish crime thrillers, and IFC Center is doing a midnights series this summer featuring three of Mann’s best-loved works. Featuring MIAMI VICE (which is actually based on a tv show from the 80s, executive produced by Michael Mann), HEAT (starring Robert de Niro and Al Pacino…they’re both in Coppola’s The Godfather Part II but never actually performed opposite each other before this) and Mann’s feature debut THIEF (it’s about a thief), this series celebrates — wait…where are you going? Come back! I wasn’t done telling you about Michael Mann!
